The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Bring Her Home" by the artist "Therion"

This scene from Therion's "Bring Her Home" presents several significant layers of meaning:

1. Grief and Consolation: Elena mourns the loss of her mother, seeking solace in prayer. The Priest, representing the church and faith, attempts to comfort her, assuring her that her mother's soul has found peace.

2. The Emergence of a "New Messiah": Seth's arrival and his address to the crucified Christ signal the rise of a new ideology. Seth proclaims himself the true Messiah, surpassing Christ. He criticizes the division of people into "good" and "evil," promising to unite humanity under the banner of "good need." This reflects the idea of Nietzsche's "Übermensch" and a reinterpretation of traditional religious dogma.

3. Doubts and Contradictions: Unlike her sister, Johanna regards Seth's words with suspicion. She warns Elena that "prophets can be wrong" and urges her not to believe everything she hears. Her words sow seeds of doubt about the veracity of Seth's claims, possibly foreshadowing future troubles.

4. Prayer as a Symbol of Faith and Hope: Despite the emergence of a "new Messiah" and her sister's doubts, Elena continues to pray, appealing to the "almighty Lord" to "bring her mother home." Prayer becomes a symbol of her unwavering faith and hope for a reunion with her mother in the afterlife.

Chapter 4.

Scene 1.

An empty, desolated church. Low lighting. Helena enters and sits down, hidden at the back, conducting a prayer for her late mother Sophia.

A priest tries to console her. He leaves after doing so.

Then Seth enters — approaches a sizable crucifix and speaks directly to Jesus on the cross. He wanders around the cross while he's talking, touching it sporadically. Seth talks about himself as being the successor of Christ, the real Messiah. He argues that he will further refine humanity. He will become what all people need. Where Christ sundered people through measures of good and evil Seth shall unite all through good needs. Helena's sister Johanna enters the church and hears the words of Seth. She warns her sister not to believe everything she hears.

Helena is begging her sister to join her in praying for their mother Sophia.

[HELENA:]

Hear my prayer, thee almighty God,

for my mother — bring her home

like an angel heaven bound

so that she may find thy side.

[PRIEST:]

Don't sound so sad my child, no sorrow will prevail.

Sophia knows every word.

Be sure of this my child — I have to leave you now –

no wish will be left unheard.

[SETH:]

What of darkness, Nazarene –

did it haunt your heart..?

[HELENA:]

Who may he be?

Hope in doubt and fear,

golden atmosphere and a cry so divine.

[SETH:]

I am the real Messiah, born where Christ did fall.

Soon bringing eyes to the blind.

Humanity refined, I will unite them all

become to the truth for all mankind.

[JOHANNA:]

Sister of mine — prophets may be false.

Beware what you hear and see.

Tolling bells I find no singing in the chimes.

[HELENA:]

Join me sister as I pray...

Hear my prayer thee almighty God

for our mother — bring her home.
