The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Burning the Palace" by the artist "Therion"

This text narrates a pivotal moment in the confrontation between two forces: Christianity, represented by the army led by Joanna, and paganism, personified by Set.

The death of Helena, seemingly a significant figure for Set, marks a turning point in the balance of power. Christians launch a decisive offensive, attacking Set's residence. Notably, the attack takes place deliberately at dusk, symbolizing the onset of darkness for Set and the approach of light (victory) for the Christians.

Despite desperate resistance, Set's palace is engulfed in flames. The burning palace is a metaphor for the destruction of the old world, paganism, under the onslaught of the new faith.

Set, acknowledging defeat in this battle, chooses to flee but does not surrender. His words "We will start a battle, a war" speak of his intention to continue the fight, albeit in a different format.

The Christians, rejoicing, glorify Christ, their God, seeing the burning palace and the flight of Set as a sign of their imminent victory.

The entire text is permeated with the atmosphere of religious war, where both sides are convinced of their righteousness and are ready for anything for the sake of their faith's triumph.

Chapter 23.

Scene 1.

Twilight — beautiful natural atmosphere. 2 weeks have passed since the death of Helena. Suddenly a troop of soldiers under the command of Johanna march rapidly towards the Emperor's residence. Guards call Seth out onto the balcony. Johanna and other invading troops are trying to set fire to the palace. Guards are putting out most of the fire and one soldier of Seth is wounded while trying to stop the flames from spreading. Suddenly, the night is lit up by thousands of soldiers marching up, all with torches and burning arrows. They all massively throw their torches and shoot arrows into the palace, which starts to burn. Seth considers the onslaught and realizes that escape is possible. He calls Apollonius. Eventually Seth and Apollonius are escorted out by their closest people through a secret exit. They flee into the desert. Meanwhile the squad outside the residence are chanting tributes to Christ and call out curses on his sworn enemy.

[AGNES:]

So, it has come to this...

[JOHANNA:]

Yes, it has come to this...

Heaven will have its way...

[SETH:]

Trust me, this holy temple remains not for thee.

Hear me Johanna, be gone, take heed.

[JOHANNA:]

I'll not run,

nor will my soul hide

for time has come.

Prince of night,

thy fate awaits thee –

light this day will prevail.

[MARE & AGNES:]

Bless you, Christus!

Bless you, Christus!

[WOUNDED SOLDIER:]

Hailing from who we are — he is the master –

ever to conquer, ever to rise again!

[AGNES:]

Future reaching yesterday,

such a painful human touch –

you will feel it soon...

[JOHANNA:]

Thy kingdom shall return to dust!

Cursed be thy name!

[AGNES:]

Cursed be thy name and thy spirit!

[TROOP & JOHANNA:]

No throne of darkness shall remain.

No echo from your fall.

Prepare for fire, spawn of hell.

[JOHANNA:]

All, Lord, for you...

[SETH:]

You can't reach me, soon I will be gone.

Into battle, into war we will go.

[CHRISTIAN ARMY:]

Heroes unite, summon to fight.

Hearts of God are protected by swords.

Martyrs of grace, soon we shall face

Armageddon, we'll ride into dawn...

[SETH & APOLLONIUS:]

Unleash morning, meet us face to face.

Into battle, into war we will go.

[CHRISTIAN ARMY:]

Mighty and strong, still marching on — never surrender!

Curtains fall down — end of our time...

[CHRISTIAN ARMY & JOHANNA:]

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Ave!

God of creation and of man!

[CHRISTIAN ARMY:]

Heroes unite, summon to fight.

Hearts of God are protected by swords.

Martyrs of grace, soon we shall face

Armageddon, we'll ride into dawn...
