The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Forgive Me" by the artist "Therion"

This text is the libretto for the song "Forgive Me" by the Swedish metal band Therion. It describes a tense scene of confrontation between the forces of light and darkness, where the main characters play out a drama of love, faith, and betrayal.

Driven by religious zeal, Joanna intends to destroy Set, whom she considers the embodiment of evil. She prepares for murder, seeking support from God and her companions, Mara and Agnessa.

The appearance of Set, confident in his strength and power, exacerbates the conflict. He is not afraid of enemies and even invites them to join him.

At this moment, Elena, Set's beloved, enters the fray, torn between her love for him and her faith in God. Her pleas for reconciliation remain unanswered.

Elena faces an agonizing choice: submit to Joanna's will and kill Set or remain faithful to her lover. In the end, unable to betray her love, Elena takes her own life with the dagger intended for Set.

The finale of the scene is imbued with grief and sorrow. Elena's death brings satisfaction to none of the characters. Even Joanna, obsessed with the idea of destroying Set, feels no joy from such an outcome. The spiritual war is not over, but only suspended, leaving behind a feeling of emptiness and unresolved issues.

Chapter 21.

Scene 1.

In a secret part of the residence, in a circle of white candles Johanna is sitting with the dagger in front of her. In silence she gazes at it. Mare and Agnes are slowly walking around the circle of light, holding personal belongings of Seth and Helena. Johanna is singing in praise of God. Agnes joins. Johanna asks for the dagger, for strength and guidance. Seth enters the room. He expresses that he knows what is going on. Agnes asks him what he actually knows... Seth describes himself as the great leader that no one can defeat. Johanna argues that time has come... Helena enters the room. Seth offers feedback on her arrival. Helena appeals for reconciliation while Agnes is urging her to join their side. Johanna says she has to fulfil her mission... Helena then expresses absolute despair and asks to be handed the dagger, reluctantly Johanna does this. Seth asks his beloved to come to him. Helena responds that she is about to do what she must do. Seth offers an invitation, seemingly without fear. Helena puts the dagger against the chest of Seth and utters a few last words of forgiveness. Johanna and Agnes appeal to her to complete the action. Helena, who cannot endure her inhumane loyalty, struggles, turns the dagger around and runs it into her own chest. She falls to the floor. Johanna, Mare, Agnes and Seth speak to the dying Helena who passes away in the arms of Seth on the floor. Agnes says a prayer over Helena. Johanna, Mare and Seth are talking to the dead. Agnes and Seth utter words of grief. The shock and the turmoil of the emotional state means that everything beyond the tragedy of Helena appears indifferent. The spiritual war is stopped at this moment. Seth approaches Johanna and hands over the dagger with a message that it belongs to her... Then Seth carries his beloved out while celebrating her in the company of a choir of angels...

[JOHANNA:]

In thy grace...

[JOHANNA & AGNES:]

...turn to me and bless the soul of this faithful child.

None more divine than thee our lord!

[JOHANNA:]

Lead me on to be strong —

holy mission — and guide my hand. Amen!

[SETH:]

Now face thy foe!

[AGNES:]

Our lord has brought you here.

[SETH:]

I heed no call, none but my own.

[AGNES:]

To be boastful suits no mortal man.

[SETH:]

Join the night supreme!

I will be your guiding star.

I will set you free!

[JOHANNA:]

Into the darkness forever you must go!

[HELENA:]

Still the dawn may rise and shine...

[SETH:]

Out of the darkness, my love,

I knew that you would come...

[AGNES:]

Join with us! Join with God!

[HELENA:]

It must not end, not like this, if we conjoin as one.

[SETH:]

Join the night supreme!

I will be your guiding star.

I will set you free!

[JOHANNA:]

Into the darkness forever you must go!

Fallen you are, fallen from the heavens to our world.

Fallen you are till the end of our time and beyond.

[HELENA:]

Sister, o blood of mine,

hand me the dagger, hand me the answer,

hand me the voice of God!

[SETH:]

Come to me, to the fallen, my love...

[HELENA:]

Deep down somewhere, in me I knew — what I had to do.

[SETH:]

Come to me, to the fallen, my love...

[HELENA:]

My love..., forgive me...

[JOHANNA & AGNES:]

Hear the whisper within you sister,

from God and may peace come to your heart.

[JOHANNA, MARE, AGNES & SETH:]

In the cloak of night, fallen you are.

Thou shall rise again, enter the void.

[AGNES:]

In stillness keep eyes of gold your name.

Nightbirds take flight and sing.

[JOHANNA, MARE & SETH:]

In the cloak of night, fallen you are.

Thou shall rise again, enter the void.

[AGNES & SETH:]

Bless you into moonlight and the temple you shall now

meet in turmoil — the soul will flow and shine.

[SETH:]

Give me your hand, receive this tool for it belongs to you.

[CHOIR OF ANGELS:]

Float, float with time, and the night soon shall see you,

greet you, tell you..., of dawn...
