The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Hail Caesar!" by the artist "Therion"

This text is part of the libretto for the rock opera "Hail Caesar!" by the band Therion. This scene describes the establishment of a totalitarian regime led by Set, who came to power by promising people peace, equality, and prosperity.

The meaning of the text is multifaceted:

Critique of Populism: Set is portrayed as a charismatic leader who manipulates the crowd using flattering promises and creating an image of universal well-being. People, blinded by his charisma and promises of a better life, do not notice the lies and tyranny hidden behind beautiful words.

The Illusion of Utopia: The "paradise on earth" that Set promises turns into control and suppression. Under the guise of universal equality and well-being, a totalitarian regime is hidden, where dissent is suppressed.

The Role of Propaganda: The chorus praising Set embodies the power of propaganda, which shapes public opinion and makes people believe in lies.

A Warning: Joanna, unlike Mara and Agnes, does not succumb to general euphoria and sees Set's true face. Her words are a warning about the dangers of blind faith and a call for critical thinking.

Thus, Scene 1A of the opera "Hail Caesar!" is a vivid illustration of how easily people are manipulated and how insidious tyranny can look, hiding behind the mask of goodness and justice.

Chapter 9.

Scene 1A.

Six months have passed. The rule of Seth has created miracles. His politics and philosophy have united all elements of society and his actions of improving society have already begun to bear fruits. Seth emerges on a plateau above a cheering crowd. His statement emphasizes that peace must be followed by prosperity for everyone — the general equality of saturation. Then, with authority, he steps back.

The people form themselves into groups. Poor and rich alike eat, drink and socialize. The tributing Choir grows to gigantic proportions.

Johanna arrives along with Mare and Agnes. Gently Mare and Agnes try to point at the fact that joy thrives and grows around them but Johanna warns them against being misled.

Seth emerges again — featuring Helena beside him as his newly wedded wife. The couple receives the people's whole-hearted ovation in all keys possible.

[PEOPLE:]

Oh thee, Caesar Seth, mightiest of men, the chosen one!

Light us, Caesar Seth, by your hand, the flame of liberty!

Fly us, Caesar Seth, over distant land and over sea!

Light us, Caesar Seth, by your hand, the flame of liberty!

[SETH:]

People, I serve you for one and for all

by the devotion and hope in my heart.

Yes I will bring paradise on earth,

empty of sin, proud to burn.

[PEOPLE:]

Caesar Seth, till the end and beyond, do us defend.

Beautiful will your art shape our world to whom you are.

[AGNES:]

See, joy that thrives.

[MARE:]

He seems but harmless, so mild yet so strong.

Upwards to heaven he will carry us.

[JOHANNA:]

Don't be misled, his angel eyes are dark.

Hear what I say, he is false!

[PEOPLE:]

Caesar Seth, till the end and beyond, do us defend.

Beautiful will your art shape our world to whom you are.

[SETH:]

Greet Helena, love of mine and remember this –

never any sweeter lips could I kiss.

[PEOPLE:]

Hail to our Caesar, his beloved wife

and all true believers passing through time!

Hail the new born season, all we do behold

mark the age of reason prophets foretold!
