The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Nifelheim" by the artist "Therion"

The song "Nifelheim" by the Swedish band Therion describes the mythical realm of Niflheim from Norse mythology.

The lyrics are a hymn to this icy world where "among its mists and ice rests the very seed of life." Despite its cold and forbidding nature, Niflheim is the birthplace of life, a source of primal power.

However, Niflheim is not only the cradle of life, but also the realm of death. It is inhabited by frost giants who inspire fear with their might. The lyrics mention the river Nastrond ("corpse shore") - the place where the souls of sinners go, and the dragon Nidhogg, who gnaws at the roots of the world tree Yggdrasil.

The repeating lines "Nifelheim in the north," "Nastrond, Nastrond," "Jormungandr! Nidhogg!" create a sense of dark epicness and grandeur of this world. The final lines "These frosts nourish us, yes, the mists of the north have enveloped our bodies" sound like an oath of allegiance to Niflheim and its inhabitants.

The world of ice in the distant north is a very mysterious place.

Among its fog and inside its ice, the seed of life is buried.

When the heat of Muspel turn the ice of Nifel into a stream of water,

The creation begins to take place.

Even though the frozen water of Nifel conceal a spark of life,

This is first of all a place of death

And the world fear the lethal strength of the icegiants

Who were born here in the beginning of time.

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Jättar i norden vandrar fram skapta av rimfrost, tunga dimmors ljus

ur Vergelmers vatten stiger de, tunga i kroppen, med bestämda steg.

Dimmornas värld under Helheim

Dödens boning under Helheim

Dimmornas värld under Helheim

Dödens boning under Helheim

Draken Nidhögg

här gnager på vårt träd

Elva floder

av köld här rinner fram

Hell Nifel!

Nastrand, Nastrand

Nastrand, Nastrand

Nifelheim, Nifelheim

Nifelheim, Nifelheim

Den bistra kylan vi gör till vår vän, ja

dimmor i norden som sveper vår kropp

Jörmundgang! Nidhögg!

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Nifel i nord

Hell Nifel!

Nastrand, Nastrand

Nastrand, Nastrand

Nifelheim, Nifelheim

Nifelheim, Nifelheim

Den bistra kylan vi gör till vår vän, ja

dimmor i norden som sveper vår kropp

Jörmundgang! Nidhögg!
