The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Shifted" by the artist "Tove Lo"

In "Shifted," Tove Lo sings about a woman who's fed up with an unstable and inconsistent relationship. She feels like her partner is playing games with her emotions ("you leave me guessing"), pulling her close and then pushing her away.

The song opens with the protagonist reflecting on her mother's advice about maintaining balance in relationships and not letting them control your life. However, despite these wise words, she finds herself caught in a toxic dynamic where she constantly bends over backwards for her partner ("I'm twisting, I'm bending, I'm crawling at your whim").

The chorus is an anthem of her decision to stop investing in this relationship. She's tired of waiting for her partner to figure out their feelings ("Tired of waiting, yeah, I'm tired of waiting, When you shifted your love, I stopped putting it in"). She realizes that her own well-being is more important than trying to hold onto someone who doesn't appreciate her.

There's a theme of inner conflict throughout the song as the protagonist struggles between wanting to be with this person and knowing that they are hurting her. She admits to still holding on ("I'm still holding on to them"), but her feelings are fading. Ultimately, she chooses herself and her freedom, refusing to invest any further in a dead-end relationship.

[Verse 1:]

I listen to what my mama said, yeah,

Always  been down for a challenge since, yeah,

He  said it's all 'bout the balance

When you're talkin' love and the drama,

You just can't let it control your life, nah.

[Pre-Chorus:]

Took  it all to heart and now I'm here with you,

Twist  my body, trippin', jumpin' through your hoops,

Know I go full crazy, but I'm tired, too,

I  just can't let it control my life, nah.

[Chorus:]

Yeah, keep me guessin', think you're pullin' me in,

I'm not feelin' your love, done puttin' in work. (Yeah)

Sick of waitin', yeah, I'm sick of waitin',

When  you shifted your love, done puttin' in work. (Yeah)

I'm done, done, I'm done, done puttin' in work.

Yeah, I'm done, done, I'm done, done puttin' in work.

Yeah, you keep me guessin', think you're pullin' me in,

I'm not feelin' your love, done puttin' in work. (Yeah)

[Verse 2:]

My mama was full of shit, what?

Or did I miss the whole point of it? No!

I don't need your validation,

It's just the physical pleasure,

I just can't let it control my life, nah.

(Yeah)

[Bridge:]

Still hangin' on, but the heat's dyin' down,

I'm sick of grabbin' you all over town

Like what you did to me there for a while,

I just can't let it control my life, no.

(Yeah)
