The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Remaining Silent" by the artist "Therion"

This excerpt from "Remaining Silent" in Therion's rock opera portrays a confrontation between Set, a self-proclaimed messiah, and representatives of the Christian Church. Confident in his power and divinity, Set invites everyone to share his throne, expecting complete submission.

However, Pope Peter II and Joanna are hesitant to join him. They acknowledge Set's good deeds but question his true motives. Joanna openly asks about his hidden desires, while the Pope challenges Set to recognize Jesus Christ as his Lord, demonstrating true humility.

Set's reaction is filled with pride and anger. He refuses to bow before anyone, considering himself the only true Messiah. His words "I came here as the true Messiah and I will remain silent! I will never bow – never again!" reveal his arrogance and unwillingness to share power.

This excerpt highlights the conflict between faith and pride, humility and lust for power. Set, despite his good deeds, chooses the path of self-aggrandizement, rejecting true faith and submission to a higher power.

Chapter 14.

Scene 2B.

Seth makes a halt in front of the throne, stretching out his hands, praising the Christians and asking for feedback and information on how he best can prove them his fealty. A low murmur arises. Pope Pete II, Professor Pauli and Johanna reason with each other. Seth invites those who recognize him to sit on the stage. Almost all embrace the call. Pope Pete II remains still though. He recognizes all that Seth has done, but still has doubts. Johanna questions Seth's inner thoughts and intentions. Seth re-encourages the attendants to sit by his side. Several priests, monks and laymen enter the stage. But Johanna moves not. Completely deserted, she instead joins Pete Pope II, who expresses gratitude for all that Seth has done, but requests the Emperor to face everyone present while praising Jesus as his master. Seth, enraged with envy of the worship of Jesus Christ, is consumed by his pride and proclaims himself as the true Messiah, refusing to praise Jesus as his master.

[AGNES:]

Dubious thunder, Lord, creates thy sword.

[SETH:]

I tell you all this simple thing — winter changes to spring.

Join me here upon the stage if you do recognize my soul.

Join me as my warm embrace bid you welcome all...

[POPE PETER II:]

So much that you have done — it's true, but still...

[JOHANNA:]

...it may be true what you have done

but what is your true will?

[SETH:]

Join me here upon the stage if you do recognize my soul.

Join me as my warm embrace bid you welcome all...

[POPE PETER II:]

Filled with our true gratitude, we now ask you to

bow before Jesus Christ and his reign over you!

[SETH:]

I have come as the true Messiah, silent I remain!

Not again will I bow — never again!
