The meaning of the lyrics of the song "The Ballad of Time" (Ballada o vremeni) the performer of the song "Vladimir Vysotsky"

The castle, by time concealed and embraced,

Lies snug in a blanket of green, verdant grace.

But... the granite, in silence, its tongue will untie,

And the past, cold and distant, will start to reply.

Of campaigns and battles, of triumphs untold,

Time's passage these stories has never controlled.

Peel back the top layer, its grip firmly clasp,

And secrets it holds, time will readily grasp.

A hundred bolts crumble, a hundred chains fall,

Centuries' burden, their secrets recall.

Legends will pour, in verses so rife,

Of tournaments, sieges, and a marksman's life.

Prepare your ears for melodies known,

Observe with eyes understanding, fully grown.

For love will be love, eternally bound,

Even in futures, where your lives will be found.

Steel clashed resounding, beneath the sword's sway,

Bowstrings smoked fiercely, stretched taut in the fray.

Death perched on lances, a guttural sound,

Foes fell in the mire, for mercy profound.

Surrendering, broken, to victors they plead,

Yet some, though spared, held no virtue indeed.

Protecting their honor, a name good and true,

From venomous lies, the slanderer knew.

A steed bites the bit, may your grip find its mark,

From where flew that arrow, in daylight or dark?

Better known be the source, friend or foe in the night,

Than treachery lurking, a cowardly blight.

How fare you with scoundrels? Are they met with your might?

Do witches still haunt you, with shadows of fright?

But tell me, dear reader, is evil not clear,

Even there, in your future, with conscience held dear?

Throughout ages unyielding, in every time's flow,

The traitor, the deceiver, we reap what we sow.

An enemy's an enemy, war will remain,

Confinement is binding, freedom we'd gain.

It's freedom we hope for, our banner unfurled,

Time hasn't erased these truths of the world.

Just lift the top layer, let passion ignite,

From throats that once bled, emotions take flight.

Now, always, forever, in echoes we hear,

A price has its value, guilt will be clear.

Honor salvaged, a treasure to claim,

A friend's steadfast presence, a shield for your name.

From ancients we borrow, their purity sought,

Sagas and legends, with wisdom fraught.

For good will be good, a timeless decree,

Past, future, and present, in perfect harmony.

In Vladimir Vysotsky's "Ballad of Time", the author reflects on the connection between times, on what remains unchanged despite the course of history. He uses the metaphor of time as a castle hidden under layers of the past. But the past is not dead: "the silent granite will untie its tongue", and it will speak of feats, wars and victories.

Vysotsky argues that time is powerless to erase from the memory of mankind eternal values. One has only to "tear off the top layer" from it, and a history of love, loyalty, betrayal and struggle will unfold before us. He speaks of the immutability of human feelings: love, good, evil, honor and betrayal.

The author draws parallels between the past and the future, emphasizing that even in "your distant future" love will remain love, and evil - evil. He believes that the people of the future will retain the best qualities of the past: purity, simplicity, loyalty to friendship, the desire for freedom.

The ballad expresses the hope that despite all the difficulties, humanity will preserve its moral foundation. It is this faith that helps us "tear off ... the top layer" of time and find in the past a support for the present and the future.
