Our new art of doubt has captivated thousands. They have snatched the telescope from our hands and pointed it at their oppressors. And these selfish thugs, greedily appropriating the fruits of scientific labor, suddenly felt the cold, searching gaze of science upon them. They showered us with threats and bribes that weak souls cannot resist.

But can we turn our backs on the majority and still remain scientists? The movements of those who rule over people are incomprehensible. It is through doubt that the struggle for the right to measure the heavens has been won. But through blind faith, the mistress of Rome is still losing the battle for milk. The time will come when you will discover all that can be discovered. But your progress in science will only be a departure from humanity, and gradually the chasm between you and humanity will become so vast that one day your triumphant cry of a new discovery will be met with a universal howl of horror. And most importantly, Sarti, I have realized: I was never in any real danger. At one time, I was as powerful as the authorities. But I gave my knowledge to those in power to use or not use, or abuse, as they saw fit, for their own benefit.

I have betrayed my calling. And a man who has done what I have done cannot be tolerated in the ranks of science.
