Climbed to the podium, all choked and overwhelmed:

“Paradise, only paradise – the saving grace!” he said.

The devils roared and shouted: “Yes, it’s true!

We’ll build a paradise in our underworld domain!

For greater productivity, it’s long overdue!

Five sinners per snout is our aim!”

“Then forward march! And I shall lead the way!”

The Devil ended. “God be with you all! Let’s run!”

And sinners trembled deep within Hell’s sway,

While angels up in Heaven had begun

To flock towards the One who knows all, sees all –

But He just said: “I don’t care about the dark!”

And then declared He’d have a firing squall,

That angels are all morons, a useless ark,

Their fuss and scheming nothing new, a bore,

That Chertok had been flipped long ago, for sure.

“No Heaven here, more like a real-life slum.

I’ll go to Earth – at least they show respect!

From you to them, to all, I’ll gladly come –

Let them crucify me, I’ll accept!”

And down He went. Who is He? Where’d He gone?

But then one day, the churchgoers have made out –

A beggar by the church, drunk and alone.

“I’m God!” he cries. “Some cash to help me out!”

A sorry end (weep, young and old, and wail –

For what came before, with the Trinity burned down!):

In Heaven, it’s been hell for quite a while,

But devils built their paradise in Hell’s own town!

Пять грешников на нос уже сегодня!" —

"Ну что ж, вперёд! А я вас поведу! —

Закончил Дьявол. — С богом! Побежали!"

И задрожали грешники в Аду,

И ангелы в Раю затрепетали.

И ангелы толпой пошли к Нему —

К тому, который видит всё и знает, —

А Он сказал: "Мне наплевать на тьму!" —

И заявил, что многих расстреляет,

Что Ангел, мол, подонок и кретин,

Его возня и козни — всё не ново,

Что ангелы — ублюдки как один,

А что Черток давно перевербован.

"Не Рай кругом, а подлинный бедлам.

Спущусь на землю — там хоть уважают!

Уйду от вас к людям ко всем чертям —

Пущай меня вторично распинают!.."

И Он спустился. Кто он? Где живёт?..

Но как-то раз узрели прихожане —

На паперти у церкви нищий пьёт.

"Я Бог, — кричит. — Даёшь на пропитанье!"

Конец печальный (плачьте, стар и млад, —

Что перед этим всем сожженье Трои!):

Давно уже в Раю не рай, а ад,

Но рай чертей в Аду зато построен!
