The meaning of the lyrics of the song "Recidivist" the performer of the song "Vladimir Vysotsky"

It was a Sunday - and I wasn't picking any pockets:

"Sunday - a day of rest," - that's my motto.

Suddenly - a whistle, they grab me, call me a hooligan,

And one recognized me - yells: "Repeat offender!"

"Come on, comrade, don't be difficult,

My last name is Sergeev,

And who's the repeat offender -

I have no idea."

It was a Sunday, but the cops don't rest:

They also have a plan to fulfill, even if it chokes them,

And if they exceed it, they get rewarded there -

A repeat offender thief is worth his weight in gold.

With respect, they tell me: "Sadist! -

Treat yourself to some Belomor cigarettes.

So, you're a repeat offender?

Sign the protocol!"

And it was a Sunday, the sun was shining like a lazybones,

And all the people - some with friends, some with family,

And I sat there bored, like on the saddest Monday:

I got a very business-like major.

"How many times have you been convicted?"

"I'm not good at math!"

"But you are a repeat offender, aren't you?"

"No, comrade, I'm Sergeev."

It was a Sunday - and I was sweating, I was bending over backwards,

But the major was a math whiz:

He added something up, then multiplied it, summed it up -

And said that I had been convicted ten times.

The chief handed me a sheet of paper -

I signed it as best I could -

I wrote: "Repeat offender

Last name Sergeev."

It was a Sunday, I was tired and beaten,

But I know one thing, I'm happy about one thing:

I also made my very modest contribution

To the seven-year plan to catch hooligans and bandits!

Vladimir Vysotsky's song "The Repeat Offender" ridicules the law enforcement system in the USSR, which was often more concerned with meeting arrest quotas than finding the true culprits.

The song's lyrical hero finds himself in an absurd situation: on his day off, when he, by his own admission, "didn't pickpocket anyone," he is mistaken for a repeat offender. Despite all the hero's attempts to explain that a mistake has been made, he is accused of crimes he did not commit.

The key moment of the song is the motif of the quota. The police need to meet their target for arrests, and the lyrical hero becomes easy prey for them. They are not interested in finding out the truth, they are only interested in the result.

Thus, the song "The Repeat Offender" is a satire on Soviet reality, where the system sometimes proved to be more important than human fate.
